NBA Playoffs Decided – Who Is In And Who Is Out?

The Los Angeles Lakers will not be in this year’s NBA Playoffs.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The team that at the start of the season was one of the favorites to win the NBA Championship along with the Brooklyn Nets, that boasts the likes of Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, can finish no higher than 11th in the Western Conference.

It hasn’t been an easy season for the Nets either, as with Kyrie Irving missing for most of their home court games due to not being vaccinated, James Harden traded to the 76ers and Kevin Durant injured for periods, the Nets have stumbled their way into the play in.

However, the real shock is that the Lakers won’t even play one post-season game after a season which can only really be described as a disaster from start to finish.

In this article, we’ll take a look at how the playoffs and play in is shaping up with just two more days left in the regular season.

All odds shown come from PointsBet Sportsbook and were correct at the time of writing.

One thing to note before we take a look at who has qualified for the playoff and play in

is that for most teams, their actual final position in their conference is not decided. With two games left to play in the regular season for 26 of the 30 teams, while their position in the playoffs or play in is assured, their seeding is not yet confirmed for many.

Where a team has earned a specific seeding this is indicated in bold after the team’s record below.

NBA Current Standings Playoffs/Play In/Eliminated

Eastern Conference

Qualified For The Playoffs

Miami Heat (52-28) – 1st Seed
Milwaukee Bucks (50-30)
Boston Celtics (50-31)
Philadelphia 76ers (49-31)
Toronto Raptors (47-33)
Chicago Bulls (45-35)

Qualified For The Play In

Cleveland Cavaliers (43-37)
Brooklyn Nets (42-38)
Atlanta Hawks (42-38)
Charlotte Hornets (41-39)

Eliminated

Washington Wizards (35-45)
New York Knicks (35-45)
Indiana Pacers (25-55)
Detroit Pistons (23-57)
Orlando Magic (21-60)

The Eastern Conference has been very tight all season, but the Miami Heat have clinched the Conference by virtue of leading any potential tie-break with the Bucks.

However, all the remaining seeding positions remain open as teams could move up or down the seedings depending on how their final couple of games go.

The Play In sees the Brooklyn Nets currently in 8th, which would see them play their opening Play In game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. If they win that, then they’d be the seventh seed in the playoffs. Lose and they would face a home court game against the winners of the game between the 9th and 10th teams for a chance to be named the eighth seed.

Despite winning the Conference, Miami are +1200 with Pointsbet to win the NBA Championship, with the Bucks the shortest priced in this division at +550, with the Nets +650, the improving Celtics at +900 and the 76ers at +1000.

Western Conference

Qualified For The Playoffs

Phoenix Suns (63-17) – 1st Seed
Memphis Grizzlies (55-25) – 2nd Seed
Golden State Warriors (51-29)
Dallas Mavericks (50-30)
Utah Jazz (48-32)
Denver Nuggets (48-33)

Qualified For The Play In

Minnesota Timberwolves (46-35) – 7th Seed
Los Angeles Clippers (40-40) – 8th Seed
New Orleans Pelicans (36-44)
San Antonio Spurs (34-46)

Eliminated

Los Angeles Lakers (31-49)
Sacramento Kings (29-51)
Portland Trail Blazers (27-53)
Oklahoma City Thunder (24-56)
Houston Rockets (20-60)

In the Western Conference, the Phoenix Suns have been the dominant team all season long and locked up the Conference and the top seed a long time ago. They are also the +275 favorites with PointsBet to win the NBA Championship and given their outstanding form, it is difficult to argue with that.

The Memphis Grizzlies are +1600 but they have a solid record, the second best in the NBA and I think they are a great value bet in that market at those odds and they will be the second seed in the playoffs.

The four teams below them still require a little sorting out in terms of seeding position in the final two games, but we do know that the Timberwolves and the Clippers will meet in the Play In to decide the number 7 seed.

The losers of that game will face either the Pelicans or Spurs for the eight seed spot in the playoffs.

The Warriors are +800 but their chances have been hit with Steph Curry’s injury while you can get +2200 on the Utah Jazz and +3000 on the Dallas Mavericks.

Remaining Schedule

The teams will play their final games of the NBA regular season across the next three days, with all games completed by Sunday night.

The seedings will be finalised at this point and the Play In tournament will begin on Tuesday April 12 and conclude on Friday April 15.

The Playoffs then start on Saturday April 16 and will be completed on or before June 19.
